TOAD HOLLOW FARM

CLAY FACED BEARS

Hansel, Gretel and the Witch are my first attempt at clay faced bears. The clay is creative paper clay, the bodies are German mohair, they have glass eyes and are stuffed with glass beads and poly. Their paws are also made from the clay. They are jointed with cotter pins.

Why did I want to make clay faced bears? Well, I am always looking for ways to make my bears more "alive". I want to give them a lot of expression. Now, the bears do not have to be realistic, just look like they could be "living", ready to start moving any second.

These three bears are a little cartoonie. I designed them to be part of a scene (illustration) in a story book.

Hansel is caught in the act of licking the frosting from a piece of roof that he has just broken off the gingerbread cottage. Using clay enables me to have his clay tongue with a bit of frosting right on the tip. I have made his paws a little like hands so he can hold his sweet treasure.

Gretel has been eating a little of the transparent sugar window pane. She has just seen the witch so is looking a wee bit surprised.

The witch is bent with age. She must walk with a cane. Do you suppose she can "just taste her next meal".

The witch is about 5 inches tall in her bent position. The children are about four inches, standing.

I would like to have your reaction to this first piece. Do you like the bears with clay faces? I am not going to give up the more traditional bear. This style will just be in addition to what I usually make. E-MAIL

The gingerbread cottage is furnished and is also made from clay. The "book" is clay with two printed clay pages.
